Section # 4 Braided Cords
Norlund repeatedly mentions braided cords finishing the edges of hems,
necklines, pocket slits, and the like. This finishing appears to have
been decorative (hems
)
in some instances and functional in others (pocket slit edgings). Unfortunately,
I have not seen any clear pictures of the braid on the garments myself.
(Photocopies, yuk!). He does give a six strand braiding diagram, which
I followed to create a round braid. I tried to imitate it using both three
hole card weaving and three loop finger loop braiding (from T+C) but neither
of them gives the same surface appearance as the six strand braid. So
I can only assume that the six strand braiding gets easier with practice,
otherwise this would have been a very tedious finish to produce.
